General Pencil Company is one of THE last American made pencil companies left in the world. After the titanic Ticonderoga pencil company began to send their factories overseas, the idea of a true American pencil began to fade into the distant past. That’s when General Pencil Company shone through the darkness and saved us all.
Established in the early 1860’s, General Pencil Company has stayed in the northeastern states and stayed in the same family for over 5 generations. All dedicated to making quality pencils for artists, businessmen, teachers, students, and anyone who loves seeing “USA” on their pencil shaft. They are a company that knows the community they work in and realize it’s their community as well. We live in a mid-century Eichler home in CA – so we are always looking for fun pieces that reflect the Atomic age and the angular lines that came from that era. Sauder has been making self-assembly furniture for over 70 years. I was pleasantly surprised at their new and latest designs, easily viewable with very large product photos that include drawings with dimensions on their website. If you have been considering an IKEA purchase, I recommend that you give Sauder a look to see what they’ve been up to! Most reviews are favorable, noting sturdiness and excellent value.
Sauder makes their engineered wood and packaging with 97% recycled material, and were founded on the principles of sterwardship and producing environmentally responsible products.
I was also surprised to see that Sauder makes garage and closet storage systems, as well as work chairs (although check to see country of origin), and include modern or traditional furniture collections, and a fascinating “WoodTrac” ceiling wood paneling system. Their lines cover office computer desks, TV stands, bookcases, side tables, coffee tables, cabinets and storage, seating, craft furniture, bedroom sets, and much more. Made in USA!

American Easel makes their product with sustainable wood sourcing such as Douglas Fir from mills that practice sound forestry.

Sandusky Lee makes tons of storage solutions for your garage, office, school, warehouse, wood shop, or home. They make a huge variety of sheet metal furniture, including school lockers, wall-hung storage cabinets, security carts, desks, book shelving, tables, stands and file cabinets. I’ve even seen their cool wall-mount laptop case in our local hospital’s hallway… safe, yet easily accessible.
Lots of color options, and now they are introducing stainless steel cabinets made from heavy gauge stainless steel. Models include traditional opening handles with padlock, key lock, or electronic digital locks.
Pricing is very reasonable, and you may find their product easy to find… even at Home Depot or at office furniture stores near you. Made in the USA!
Chromcraft: Contract Seating, Chairs and Tables

Chromcraft has been making seating in the USA for over 50 years in their 500,000 square foot facility. They have a huge variety of task seating for offices, universities, airports, hosptitals or any large operation that needs tons of quality chairs. I am impressed with the variety of chair form factors that even include drafting-style seating in many of their collections.

They are certified by the Greenguard Institute for their low emitting products and materials. A full page on their website lists their green and recycling practices in detail, as well as their packaging and chrome plating practice. Interestingly their metal is almost entirely made from recycled vehicles!
I really like their selection and hope that one day they will make their cool seating available in small quantities. The architectural bench seating would be awesome anywhere.

Relatively green company that makes office furniture including modern task chairs, executive chairs, tubular steel and stackable chairs (simple, clean and modern), sturdy file cabinets of all types and sizes (lateral, legal size, and some with drawers and slide-out shelves), Iron Horse industrial strength adjustable shelving (great prices and reviews – see link below), desks, and dozens of whiteboards. File cabinets are Commclad’s specialty… there are dozens of different form-factors and categories, each with multiple color options.
